The Kingdom of Cambodia and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic have once again underscored their longstanding friendship and mutual commitment to deepening cooperation across all sectors. The pledge of unity and stronger future collaboration was made during high-level diplomatic meetings held on April 6, 2025, in Vientiane, the capital of Laos.
Prime Minister of Cambodia, Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, led a senior delegation on a one-day visit to pay respects to the late H.E. Gen. Khamtay Siphandone, former President of Lao PDR and a revered figure in the region. The visit was both a show of deep condolences and a reaffirmation of Cambodia’s enduring partnership with Laos.
Tribute and Diplomacy Go Hand in Hand
During separate courtesy calls, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet met with President of Laos H.E. Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith and Prime Minister H.E. Sonexay Siphandone. Both sides took the opportunity to recall the strong historical ties and effective cooperation that have defined the Cambodia-Laos relationship.
In his remarks, Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed profound sympathy on behalf of His Majesty the King, the Royal Government, and the people of Cambodia. He praised the legacy of H.E. Gen. Khamtay Siphandone, describing him as a national hero who dedicated his life to the progress of Laos and the strengthening of Lao-Cambodian relations.
The passing of Gen. Khamtay Siphandone on April 2, 2025, at the age of 102, was marked by tributes from leaders across the region. The Cambodian Prime Minister’s visit was especially notable for symbolizing the deep-rooted solidarity between the two nations.
Strengthening Strategic Ties
In response, both Lao leaders extended heartfelt gratitude to Cambodia’s leadership for their message of condolence and personal presence during the period of mourning. They acknowledged the significance of this gesture, seeing it as more than a diplomatic formality—it was a strong reaffirmation of trust, respect, and regional brotherhood.
The Lao leaders also spoke highly of the existing comprehensive strategic partnership between Cambodia and Laos, affirming their shared vision for regional peace, prosperity, and collaboration on issues of mutual interest.
Despite the somber tone of the occasion, the meetings concluded with a renewed spirit of cooperation. Both sides pledged to maintain the momentum of bilateral efforts in areas such as trade, education, culture, and security.
